It's difficult to imagine a ceramic product that is totally sustainable and that is capable of elevating the quality of porcelain stoneware to levels of excellence - all in a thickness of only 3 mm. It's not easy but this material does exist. It's called Kerlite, the new laminated stoneware by Cotto D'Este, available now from Tile Solutions.

Kerlite is easier to cut and install, resists frost and does not absorb odours or liquids, it's easy to clean and is lighter than ceramic tiles and conventional ceramics. Kerlite Plus can be installed directly over existing flooring in wood, ceramic or any other compact type of surface. This is because the underside of the ceramic slab has been reinforced with a dense fiberglass mat. As well as allowing excellent heat conduction, this minimum thickness mesh ensures the tile sticks solidly to the adhesive spread on the substrate. With just 3.5mm additional floor height there's no need to adjust the level of doors and jambs.

Kerlite is resistant to scratching and deep abrasion, with hardness of 8 on the MOHS scale. Its properties remain unaltered even after heavy traffic and frequent cleaning. Having no organic pigments, Kerlite is resistant to UV rays. The colours are not subject to any variation, even when exposed to extreme weather conditions. This amazing product has a high flexural breaking load, as measured by the modulus of rupture.
